In early 2010, we started out our agency like most people, out of my bedroom! We started onboarding customers slowly but steady. Since I was living in the Philippines, I figured, why not outsource some of my work to people here. I opened up an account in Upwork and started posting projects, literally within the first few minutes, I had over a dozen programmers ready to take on new challenges.

I started seeing the dollar signs!

That same night, I hired several freelancers to get started on some projects. I monitored their hours and what they were working on like a fly on S#!T. A few weeks later I was given access to the test sites and boy was I surprised. Many of the websites I got back didn’t match the designs I had provided, margins were off, weird fonts were used, content was missing and I felt like crawling in a deep hole and saying goodbye to the world.

Sound familiar?

Well, I can tell you this. After the first disappointment you’ll pick back up, like most of us do. I call this “Entrepreneurs will”. I had one very big disappointment and several thousand dollars down the drain and a few unpleasant customer calls but I was determined to turn things around.

I jumped back into Upwork, posted my jobs in India and in parts of Eastern Europe. Several weeks later, projects came back WORSE than the first time.

That’s when I decided to invest in an office space and hire in-house workers that I could mold. Developers that would understand what I’m trying to accomplish and deliver work that would rival even the largest of competitors in the market.

Years later, we now have 2 physical offices in the Philippines and 1 in the United States. We employ over 60 people with different skill sets, designers, programmers, SEOs, paid ads specialists, content writers and video editors. We generate millions of dollars of revenue a year and we have plans to expand offices to Central America soon.

Was the answer to my success to hire in-house? NO….

It was a great decision, it gave me more control but it was a lot more expensive then hiring online workers AND I would still get back work that had weird fonts, margins that was off and small gramatical errors.

I found my success when I gave my company structure. Providing standard operating procedures (SOPs), departmentalizing people based on skill set, creating new departments to handle quality assurance and customer service reps to keep customers happy.

See structure is the key to your success. Now how do you achieve this same level of structure and organization when you outsource to some random freelancer online? Well you can’t very easily do this. See an office gives you control over this structure that I’m talking about. A work environment of performers is required to keep winners and weed out those who can’t cope with the standards of your organization.
